Business Loan and Financing Warning Signs

Not every expensive product is fraudulent, and not every unfamiliar request is improper. Slow down when the provider will not identify itself, disclose the full cost, explain the agreement, or allow reasonable review.

Use this guide with current business records and written provider disclosures. Requirements vary, and no checklist can determine approval.

Claims and pressure that require caution

  • Guaranteed approval, guaranteed rates, or guaranteed funding regardless of business condition.
  • Pressure to sign immediately or warnings that normal verification will make the offer disappear.
  • Instructions to inflate revenue, hide existing debt, alter bank statements, or misstate the use of funds.
  • Requests for an advance fee before a promised loan from an organization whose identity cannot be verified.

Incomplete or confusing agreements

  • Blank spaces, missing schedules, conflicting payment amounts, or links to terms that are unavailable.
  • A factor rate presented as if it were an annual interest rate.
  • No clear total repayment, net proceeds, payment frequency, or default provision.
  • A renewal that adds new fees or refinances an existing balance without a clear cost comparison.

Protect systems and information

Do not provide email, banking, bookkeeping, or computer passwords. Verify secure portals independently, limit permissions, and review any authorization for recurring withdrawals or access to financial accounts.
