Choose Funding for a Specific Business Need

Start with the business problem, not a product name. The timing of the expense, useful life of the asset, repayment source, and need for future flexibility can narrow the structures worth researching.

Use this guide with current business records and written provider disclosures. Requirements vary, and no checklist can determine approval.

Short-term operating timing

  • Payroll, rent, or supplier timing: compare the expected cash receipt date with the full repayment schedule.
  • Inventory: estimate sell-through time, margin, unsold inventory risk, and whether access will be needed repeatedly.
  • Customer invoices: understand eligibility, customer notification, recourse, and fees before considering receivables-based funding.

Longer-lived investments

  • Equipment or vehicles: align the financing term with useful life, maintenance, resale value, and expected productivity.
  • Tenant improvements: confirm lease term, landlord contribution, permits, construction contingency, and opening delay risk.
  • Commercial property: prepare for down payment, appraisal, environmental review, closing costs, reserves, and property-level underwriting.

Measured expansion

For hiring, another location, or a new service line, build a base case and a slower-growth case. Repayment should not depend entirely on immediate new revenue.
